Sonnet to the Gemmed Satyr

Sonnet to Gemmed Satyr

Deep in the dark green forest I reside.
From leaf to stem I flutter and do hide.
For though my scales are brown and plainly laid.
Upon my wing a precious gem's displayed.

My nature is most virtuous and staid.
I just can't moult that pretty bold brocade.
Tis bright and white like Venus in the sky!
It's blue and black dimensions please the eye.

Like a vane this gem doth pull and guide,
A vanity that spans the bridge of sighs.
Sooner than be seen by those who'd eat me!
I'll hide out in the forest most discreetly.

Sooner than be gleaned by those who'd sight me.
I'll hide and wear this gem that most delights me.
